Roland Ries has held office at local and national levels, remaining true to his ideals of justice and progress. Elected Mayor of Strasbourg in 2008 – re-elected in 2014 – he is fully committed to strengthening the European role of his city and to developing an ambitious urban and civic cross-border project. Roland Ries initiated the return of the tramway to Strasbourg, developing expertise that is now internationally recognised in the sector of urban transport and mobility. He is also, since 2014, President of Cités Unies France, a federation of French local governments involved in international co-operation and, on the world level, co-President of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) since 2016. He holds the conviction that dialogue and partnership are necessary, in a world that is increasingly interdependent and in which local governments have a key role to play, especially in localising the SDGs.
