As a supplement to existing fixed-route services, Berlin’s transit system is now also dynamic and on-demand, creating routes in real time in response to rider demand. The Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) and ViaVan have joined forces to launch a dynamic ride pooling transit service. The project is the world’s largest on-demand offering of a public transport company, efficiently aggregating riders heading in the same direction. The 4-year pilot launched in September, 2018 with a fleet of 50 state-of-the-art Mercedes-Benz vehicles has quickly expanded to more than 100 vehicles, >50% of them being fully-electric. With a stagnating modal split and ever more congested roads in Germany’s capital, the partners aim to provide an attractive alternative for private vehicle users that have previously rejected public transport. Simultaneously, the service aims at reducing emission and increasing access by providing a sustainable, shared mobility option that complements BVG’s existing services.
