Pierre Dersin Graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering after receiving a Master’s degree in Operations Research also from MIT. With ALSTOM Transport since 1990, he founded the “RAM Center of Excellence” . He is currently RAM (Reliability-Availability-Maintainability) Director and PHM (Prognostics & Health Management) Director of ALSTOM Digital Mobility. He served on the IEEE Reliability Society AdCom from 2012 to 2017 and as VP, Technical Activities, in 2017. He is also a member of the IEEE Future Directions Committee.

Passenger Access Doors account for a significant share of a rail mass transit system life cycle cost (LCC). Door failures typically cause heavy disruption in operations and, if too frequent, are very detrimental to the operator’s and the OEM’s image. Alstom’s R&D program addresses both concerns through a PHM (prognostics & health management) approach: substituting predictive maintenance (based on asset condition) for traditional systematic preventive maintenance (based on mileage). Features extracted from continuously monitored data, such as motor current and voltage and door position, are used in order to build a ‘health indicator’, which is a distance to normality. Main benefits are: 1. Availability increase: degradations detected before evolving into service-affecting failures and maintenance crews advised soon enough to act. 2. Cost reduction: unnecessary maintenance actions avoided
